KAPIT: More than 100 women from various political parties and non-governmental organisations here attended a forum on self-empowerment in a modern setting and women roles in enhancing their family’s economy jointly organised by Kapit Division Women Association and Kapit Chinese Women Association at Meligai Hotel here, last Thursday afternoon.
Officiating at the closing of the forum was an Administrative Officer of Kapit District Office, Wee Teck Min.
“Gone were the days when women’s roles are confined to the kitchen and looking after their homes and children. Those were practiced in the past. Now, in the modern world, we live in a knowledge-based society and unless we keep abreast with the current tide, we would be left behind. Hence, the only way to keep up to date is through education, knowledge and skill sharing to empower the women folks in nation building.
“Today, women like their male counterparts when given the opportunity are able to shine in all fields. In Malaysia, we have many success stories of our women playing prominent role in both the private and public sectors. What is important is women must have the opportunity to prove themselves,” Wee explained.
He also lauded Kapit Division Women Association and Kapit Chinese Women Association for organising the forum for local women.
Organising secretary, Kunchi Bantin in her speech welcomed the more than 100 participants to the forum which focused on the roles of modern women.
“This forum also focuses on healthy lifestyles and how best women can play their roles to complement their family’s income. Remember the saying ‘health is wealth’,” she said.
Also present were Assistant Director of Welfare Department Kapit Office, Peter Gabong, Temenggong Tan Kian Hoo, Pemanca Yong Thu Fook, Penghulu Sia Shui Poh, Kapitan Kong Cheak He, Kapitan Yap Hui Li and chairperson of Kapit Division Women Association and Kapit Chinese Women Association, Penghulu Wong Kie Ing.
