KUCHING: The heart of a mother, the diligence of a woman, and the strength of a fighter— these are qualities that often go unspoken but are the very foundation of families, communities and societies.
International Women’s Day, celebrated today (March 8), is more than just a date on the calendar—it is a moment to honour the countless contributions of women throughout history and in our daily lives.
Whether in the workplace, at home, in education or on the frontlines of change, women have continuously risen above challenges, proving time and again that they are forces to be reckoned with.
In the spirit of this global celebration, Sarawak Tribune took to the streets to hear the public’s thoughts on International Women’s Day, who inspires them, and their messages for women everywhere.

To me, International Women’s Day is a time to appreciate the incredible contributions of women across different fields and generations. The person I admire the most is my mother. She’s one of the hardest-working people I know—teaching during the weekdays and, on Sundays, preparing meals for our church community.
Despite her busy schedule, she always makes time for me, making sure I’m well taken care of. Her selflessness and dedication inspire me every day. To all the women out there—never let your gender define your limits. Keep pushing forward and achieving what you’re meant to do.

International Women’s Day, to me, is about protecting women’s rights—whether it’s the right to vote, access to education, healthcare or the freedom to shine in whatever they do. Looking back at history, this day represents the ongoing fight for women empowerment. It’s a time to celebrate the women in our lives, supporting them to be who they want to be, do what they love and achieve success, just like the many inspiring women we see today.
The woman who inspires me the most is my mother. As the eldest sibling in her family, she has always been a pillar of strength and guidance. She raised me and my brothers to be respectful towards the women in our lives. Beyond our family, she is also a great leader—serving as the head of discipline at her school. She’s strong in her decision-making skills while also showcasing her humility, nurturing nature and deep understanding of others.
To all the incredible women out there—our sisters, mothers, aunties and female cousins—Happy International Women’s Day! May you continue to shine in your journey and achieve success in everything you do. Keep leading by example and inspiring those around you.

Today is about celebrating women and their limitless potential. One of the most inspiring figures to me is Datuk Sharifah Hasidah, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations). Her resilience, empowerment and dedication to her work have been truly remarkable.
I once asked her how she manages her demanding career, responsibilities and hectic schedule without feeling overwhelmed. Her answer was simple yet powerful: “Because we can.” Those three words spoke volumes about the strength and capability of women. To every woman reading this—find inspiration in those who uphold integrity, resilience, and a commitment to making a difference. You are stronger than you think, and your contributions matter.

International Women’s Day is a celebration of the women who shape our lives and society. For me, my greatest inspiration has always been my mother. Even now, she continues to support me, believing in my potential and setting an example of kindness, patience and strength.
To all the incredible women out there—always strive for greatness. The world may sometimes feel like it belongs to men but never forget that it belongs to women just as much.
