MANCHESTER: Two strategic priorities that will shape Sarawak’s future are strengthening the brain power-driven economy and enhancing global connectivity to unlock new international opportunities.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed that the state can no longer rely solely on finite natural resources such as oil and gas, and must instead transition towards a knowledge- and innovation-based economy.

He also underscored the importance of prudent financial management, including the establishment of the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund, which stood at RM8.6 billion as of last year and will remain untouched for 20 years to ensure long-term economic stability.

“If we are strong in terms of ‘brain power’ and manage our finances wisely, Sarawak’s future will remain secure despite global economic uncertainties,” he said in an UKAS report during the Anak Sarawak Dinner held here on Sunday (May 3 local time).

In addition, Abang Johari highlighted the need for Sarawak to strengthen its international network by enhancing global ties, including through the establishment of its own airline, AirBorneo, as well as reinforcing the role of strategic ports such as Bintulu Port.

These measures, he said, are seen as crucial in positioning Sarawak as a strategic hub linking trade routes between the West and the East, particularly amid ASEAN’s economic growth and the evolving landscape of green technology.

He also pointed to the state’s strong potential in green energy production, such as green methanol, which is expected to become a key future fuel for the global shipping industry.

“With our strategic position and shift towards green technology, Sarawak has the potential to become a major player in the region’s new economy,” he said.
