SIBU: The idea of constructing an iconic bridge in Sibu, inspired by the world-famous London Bridge, has captured the imagination of many.
This follows Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s nod of approval for the idea during a Hari Raya gathering with the local community here last night.
Abang Johari’s positive response has sparked a wave of optimism among residents.
They believe the project could serve as a new landmark for the town, while also boosting connectivity, tourism, and long-term economic development.
For many, this bridge represents more than just a structure – it symbolises a vision of progress that aligns with the state government’s ongoing efforts to modernise infrastructure and uplift towns like Sibu.
Below are some comments and responses from the public in the town when contacted by Sarawak Tribune regarding the planned bridge.
Eddy Puah Teik Chai, 56:
“How could we not be excited and happy? The Premier (Abang Johari) is giving us not just any bridge that will boost our economy, but an iconic one.
“As a resident of Sibu, I believe the Premier doesn’t just talk – he delivers. Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) walks the talk.
“It may take time, but they will certainly make it happen.
“All the projects are interconnected, so I fully support this development project.”
Angeline Cynthia Antai, 29:
“Of course, Sibu should also have an iconic bridge like other cities.
“This is because Sibu is strategically located geographically – linking various districts to other towns.
“Moreover, an iconic bridge would serve as a symbol for Sibu itself.
“It would also ease travel for residents from the western parts.
“As a resident of Sibu, I truly hope Premier Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, succeeds in securing funding for the benefit of all.”
Penghulu Mirza Mohamad, 40:
“As a penghulu representing the Kampung Bahagia Jaya Teku community, I am thrilled and fully welcome the proposal to construct an iconic London Bridge-style structure in Sibu.
“It will not only become a new symbol of pride for the town but also create vast opportunities for tourism, economic growth, and our youth.
“With a modern design that incorporates Sarawakian identity, I’m confident the bridge will beautify Sibu and showcase our local culture to visitors both domestic and international.
“Projects like this prove the state government’s commitment to balanced development between urban and rural areas.
“We, at the village level, truly appreciate it and are ready to support it for the sake of shared progress.”
Claudia Lennya Jana, 29:
“Certainly, this would be a meaningful gift for the people of Sibu.
“A design resembling the London Bridge will not only ease travel from one side to the other and allow passage for vessels but also become a draw for tourists from outside. Hopefully, it will come true.”
Temenggong Stanley Geramong Bandar, 66:
“I highly appreciate the efforts of the Sarawak government in planning the construction of a bridge in Sibu, which was mentioned by the Premier yesterday as being similar to the ‘London Bridge’.
“This bridge will play a vital role in enhancing connectivity between communities in Sibu, especially by reducing travel time and linking the western bank of Sibu to the town.
“This will benefit the local community, facilitate the transportation of goods, and improve access to healthcare and educational services.”
