KUCHING: The 2026 Sarawak-level celebration of the 17th official birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Betong will serve as an important platform to strengthen public understanding of the constitutional monarchy institution and foster patriotism among the people.

Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said the state-level celebration would provide an opportunity, particularly for rural communities, to gain a deeper appreciation of the role of the monarchy through a range of educational and engaging programmes.

He said Betong was chosen as the host venue to allow residents outside major urban centres to experience the scale and significance of a state-level celebration.

“Betong was selected because we want people in rural areas to experience the festivities of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday celebration and better understand the country’s royal institution system,” he said.

He said this during the Juh Randau UKAS programme on Thursday (May 28) as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

Sikie said a variety of activities had been lined up throughout the celebration, including Betong Kitchen, the Raja Kita Exhibition, interfaith thanksgiving ceremonies, a tea reception and a People’s Concert.

He said the Betong Kitchen, which will feature 26 local food stalls, is expected to be one of the event’s main attractions while providing small traders with an opportunity to generate income during the celebration period.

“Through the exhibition, especially, the younger generation will have the opportunity to learn about the history and role of the royal institution in our country,” he said.

At the same time, Betong Division Resident Datuk Richard Michael Abunawas said extensive preparations have been carried out to ensure the smooth running of the celebration, including logistics, security and cleanliness arrangements.

He said close cooperation between government agencies and the local community had been instrumental in making the state-level event possible.

“Opportunities like this also help small traders and local entrepreneurs generate income while promoting their products to visitors,” he said.

The People’s Concert, scheduled for June 14, is expected to be the highlight of the celebration, featuring performances by local artistes and a fireworks display.

Meanwhile, the Raja Kita Exhibition, scheduled from June 11 to 14, is expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors, including school students, and will offer insights into the history of the monarchy and the country’s royal institution.

The celebration is not only intended to honour the royal institution but is also expected to strengthen patriotism, unity and togetherness among Sarawakians through the participation of people from all walks of life.
