KUCHING: Sarawak Tribune journalists and editors went beyond traditional storytelling on Tuesday (Aug 4), exploring advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools to create digital news solutions and enhance their craft.
On the final day of the Application of AI Technology in Journalism programme, jointly organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) and Sarawak Tribune, participants continued exploring AI applications under the guidance of veteran journalist and media analyst Munir Ana’am Zuljadan.
The session began with Munir revisiting the previous day’s lessons and encouraging participants to share whether they had applied the AI techniques outside the training.
He said AI should be viewed as a tool to assist journalists in their work.
“At the end of the day, we decide whether the AI output is suitable or not. We still have to verify the results before using them,” he said during the session.
The 21 participants then explored more advanced AI applications through practical exercises, including creating an AI news presenter using HeyGen, exploring agentic AI in journalism with Codex, and building an AI newsroom application through Replit’s agentic AI workflow.
They were also introduced to agentic AI integration with Excel and ChatGPT through a demonstration on how different AI tools could support newsroom tasks.
The programme built on the first day’s session, which covered prompt engineering, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), AI agents using ChatGPT and Claude, as well as research and chronology reporting with Perplexity.
