MANCHESTER: Sarawak must prepare its younger generation to navigate rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and automation as the state positions itself for future economic shifts, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Your generation will face a different world. AI is advancing very rapidly. In the future, you will work alongside technology and robots,” he said in an UKAS report, during the Sarawak Agenda Town Hall titled ‘Sarawak Towards The Future’ held in conjunction with Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2026, UK Edition on Sunday (May 3, local time) here.

The session was moderated by Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.

In this regard, Abang Johari stressed that talent development remains a key priority to ensure Sarawakians are equipped with the necessary skills in strategic fields.

“We need to develop talent and knowledge. That is why we emphasise education, including free tertiary education in certain fields,” he said.

At the same time, he underscored the need to strengthen Sarawak’s economy so that it aligns with the academic backgrounds of its younger generation, thereby encouraging them to return and contribute to the state.

“If our economy matches the knowledge they acquire, they will return. Otherwise, they will continue to remain overseas,” he said.

He also highlighted that the state’s strong financial position enables the implementation of key development projects, particularly in rural infrastructure, education and healthcare.

“We need to be financially strong. When we have revenue, only then can we develop the state and assist the people,” he said.

Abang Johari added that infrastructure development, including the construction of bridges and roads, has significantly improved the livelihoods of rural communities by enhancing market access and boosting income.

“We build bridges not just for convenience, but to enhance the people’s economy. When there is access to markets, their income will increase,” he said.

Looking ahead, he stressed that Sarawak must continue to adapt to global economic changes to remain competitive.

“We cannot remain static. We must move in step with global changes and seek new opportunities for the future,” he said.
