MIRI: In a stark warning to the public, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew has urged citizens to prioritise regular health check-ups, particularly for diabetes — a condition that has reached alarming levels in Malaysia.

The Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I (Tourism), speaking during a visit to the new Diabetic Malaysia branch in Miri, highlighted the insidious nature of diabetes, which often goes undetected until it manifests serious health complications.

“The percentage of diabetics in Malaysia is very high, and the main worry is that many people do not realise they have this condition.

“Diabetes can be lurking within us without any pain or obvious symptoms. Unlike headaches or stomach aches, high sugar levels often remain concealed,” he said.

According to medical experts, undiagnosed diabetes can lead to dire health consequences, including blindness and kidney failure.

“Most dialysis patients face sugar problems,” Ting noted, emphasising the critical need for early detection through consistent health screenings.

He praised the Diabetic Malaysia Miri branch’s efforts, which included the acquisition of their new premises on Jalan Cahaya.

The Miri branch chairman Ting Chiew Mou, along with vice president Datuk Dr Fam Tem Lom, accompanied Ting on a visit to the branch.

The new centre, which is currently under construction and aims to serve as a hub for diabetes awareness and education, has been a significant milestone for the community, with funding raised entirely through donations.

“It is indeed commendable that they undertook this initiative for their society,” Ting praised the determination of the Miri branch.

“This challenge was not easy, but their commitment to purchasing this facility in cash speaks volumes about their dedication.

“As work progresses on the new centre, they are hopeful that increased public support will enhance the resources available for those affected by diabetes.

“I would like to re-emphasise the importance of regular check-ups,” Ting said.
