KUCHING: Sarawak’s young singer Aleysha Shareef Van Der Horst secured a fifth-place finish at the 17th Sanremo Junior World Finals in Italy, competing against some of the world’s top youth vocalists.
The 13 to 16 category finalist was among 19 contestants from different countries and was also awarded a Diploma with Special Mention, given to only a handful of standout performers.
Her vocal coach, Dewi Liana Seriestha, described the achievement as a reflection of years of disciplined training and artistic development.
“Aleysha’s achievement at Sanremo is truly remarkable,” she said, noting that the recognition placed the young singer among the competition’s standout performers.
She added that the result highlighted Aleysha’s strong vocal foundation, built on consistency, precision and confidence.
Aleysha’s mother, Shirley Hasmani Datuk Eddie, said the family was satisfied with the outcome, noting the high standard of competition at the international finals.
“Aleysha is up there at fifth place, so we are still pleased with the result amidst this very strong field,” she said, adding that it further strengthens her daughter’s growing list of international achievements.
She also expressed appreciation to Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for sponsoring the trip and supporting young talents in Sarawak.
Looking ahead, Aleysha is set to return home to complete her second single in Bahasa Malaysia, following the release of her debut international English track, Shine Like Us, earlier this year.
The Sanremo Junior World Finals is widely regarded as a premier global platform for young vocalists aged six to 16, with this year’s edition featuring national champions and seasoned performers from 19 countries.
