KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Lee Jae Myung on his election as President of the Republic of Korea.

Anwar said the outcome marks a turning point for South Korea, a nation that has emerged from a period of intense contest and scrutiny with resilience and democratic resolve.

“The people have spoken for renewal: of trust, of institutions, and of national purpose.

“I welcome the opportunity to work with President Lee to deepen the friendship between our nations: in trade and technology, in peace and security, and in the enduring ties between our peoples,” said Anwar in a statement posted on his Facebook today.

Anwar also highlighted the elevation of Malaysia–ROK relations to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024, calling it a reflection of their shared aspirations.

Looking ahead, he voiced hope that Asean would feature more prominently in Seoul’s regional strategy.

As Malaysia and South Korea assume the chairmanships of Asean and APEC respectively in 2025, Anwar said the two nations are well-positioned to lead meaningful regional efforts.

“In a time of global flux, deeper partnership between Southeast Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all,” he added

Anwar said he looks forward to welcoming President Lee to Kuala Lumpur this October for the Asean-led summits and meeting again in Gyeongju for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

“Malaysia wishes him wisdom and success in the journey ahead,” he said.

Lee Jae Myung secured the presidency in a snap election held after the impeachment of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, following a brief period of martial law.

With all votes counted, Lee won 49.42 percent of nearly 35 million ballots, defeating conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo, who received 41.15 percent.

The election also recorded the highest voter turnout since 1997, according to the national election commission.
