KUCHING: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for wearing a ‘baju burung’ (Iban warrior-like outfit) during an official programme.

Anwar had earlier worn the traditional attire during the Ministry of Works’ Gawai Dayak celebration, and chose to keep it on for the subsequent official event, a gesture Nanta described as deeply meaningful.

“This reflects the Prime Minister’s sensitivity and openness towards Dayak culture, particularly that of the Iban community.

“It is a symbol of respect and recognition for Sarawak’s cultural heritage and identity,” he said in a Facebook post today (June 19).

As an Iban and representative of the community, Nanta said he was genuinely touched by the gesture.

“It sends a strong message that the diverse cultures and traditions in Malaysia, regardless of origin, are celebrated and valued at the highest levels of leadership.

“Thank you, Prime Minister, for showing Malaysians that unity is strengthened when we embrace and honour our differences,” he added.

Earlier, Anwar, through a post on his Facebook page, shared that he had received a visit from the President of Timor-Leste, Dr José Ramos-Horta, at his residence.

In the photo posted, Anwar was seen wearing a striking red-orange ‘baju burung’.
