An appreciation for tennis stretches back to the era of wooden rackets, reflecting Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee’s long-standing connection to the sport’s classic generation.
Despite his responsibilities as an assemblyman and a shift in priorities towards family life, tennis remains a sport he continues to follow closely.
During a casual question-and-answer session with Sarawak Tribune on Tuesday, Iskandar shared insights into his love for traditional food gatherings, cooking, vintage motorcycles, and spending more time with his parents and wife.
Sarawak Tribune: What is something the public may not know about you?
Iskandar: Most of the time, I spend quality time with my family, especially during weekends.
We usually have gatherings once a month, enjoying traditional food like linut and grilled fish.
What do you usually enjoy doing with your family?
One thing I enjoy most is taking my wife window shopping because I want to spend more time with her now that our children are all grown up. She spends a lot of time at home managing the family, so this is my way of giving back time to her.
How important is family time to you at this stage of your life?
At the same time, I also make it a point to visit my parents because they are already old. Sometimes I miss my mother’s cooking, so I’ll ask her what ingredients she needs and buy them for her.
At this stage of my life, I prefer spending quality time with my family, my parents, and my children.
What are some hobbies you enjoy outside politics?
Besides that, I enjoy food hunting. Whenever I travel around places like Kuala Tatau and other areas, my family and I like trying different local food spots.
Do you enjoy sports as well?
When it comes to sports, I used to play tennis. I also enjoy watching tennis, especially the older generation of players, particularly those from the era of wooden rackets, such as John McEnroe.
What is your interest in motorcycles?
I also enjoy motorcycles. I own a Kawasaki ER6N, although the battery is weak now because I seldom ride it. I also collect old motorcycles. I still keep my old Vespa scooter, an SS110, and several vintage motorcycles. I enjoy collecting vintage things because I appreciate their design and history.
