KOTA SAMARAHAN: The placement of a young woman with autism at a care facility in Kuching was carried out in accordance with legal procedures, says Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She was alluding to a recently viral video showing the woman inside the care facility, which sparked concerns from her parents over the conditions in which their daughter was being kept.

Nancy explained the young woman’s placement at the facility followed a Children’s Court order and was made with the consent of her parents, adding that the ministry had been informed they were unable to manage her aggressive behaviour.

“We do not simply take action without abiding by the law,” she told reporters after officiating the 3rd Sarawak Orchid Society (SARORSO) Graduation Ceremony at the PeTARY Auditorium, UNIMAS, today (Jul 6).

She said her condition is currently stable, although she continues to display aggressive behaviour under certain circumstances and remains under the supervision of medical professionals.

Nancy said the ministry’s priority remains safeguarding her welfare while ensuring she receives the care and support she requires.

Following the incident, she said the ministry had advised the care facility to strengthen its management of the case.

The ministry will also obtain medical advice on managing individuals with aggressive behaviour, arrange counselling sessions involving the young woman, her family and the care facility, and enhance periodic oversight through the Child Protection Team.

Nancy added that JKMS would continue overseeing her condition while obtaining regular reports from the facility through its Child Protector.
