BELAGA: Efforts to strengthen Sarawak’s power supply system are progressing with the implementation of the Bakun–Murum Transmission Line Project.

The project aims to enhance grid resilience and ensure a more stable and reliable energy supply in the central region of the state.

A symbolic ceremony to mark the project’s progress was held through the traditional Pela Daleh ritual at the Murum Junction substation in Simpang Urun, as a show of respect for the customs and culture of the local Orang Ulu community.

The ceremony, organised by the Belaga District Office in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), was officiated by Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Telecommunications) Datuk Liwan Lagang and attended by Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon.

Bunyak speaks at the event.

Also present were SEB Power chief executive officer (CEO) Bunyak Lunyong, Belaga district officer Bidah Lujah, representatives from government agencies and local community leaders.

In his remarks, Bunyak described the project as a strategic step in strengthening the stability of Sarawak’s electricity grid, ensuring a more consistent energy supply for both domestic and industrial users.

He also said the approach aligns with the company’s social investment efforts, which also emphasise cultural preservation and community development.

“The project not only enhances grid capacity, but the Pela Daleh ceremony also reflects Sarawak Energy’s commitment to respecting local customs and strengthening ties with the community,” he said at the event on Wednesday (Apr 29) as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

As part of ongoing engagement, similar Pela Daleh ceremonies will be held at several longhouses, including Uma Badeng, Uma Nyaving, Uma Apan, Uma Sambop Long Semutut, Uma Sambop Batu Pilau and Rh Kejaman Lasah, to ensure inclusive community participation.

The project spans approximately 21.2 kilometres and involves the construction of a double-circuit 275kV transmission line linking the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam to Murum Junction.

Since its commencement in December 2025, the project has achieved 8.64 per cent progress as of March 2026.

Initial phases of implementation have focused on engineering works, route clearing and comprehensive soil studies, with completion targeted for November 2027.

The enhanced transmission network is expected to play a crucial role in improving system stability, reducing the risk of large-scale power disruptions, and ensuring that up to 2,520 megawatts of electricity generated from the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam can be transmitted more efficiently.

SEB assured that it will continue to strengthen collaboration with local communities and stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation and deliver long-term benefits to the people.
