BALINGIAN Assemblyman, Abdul Yakub Arbi, has tabled a significant development proposal aimed at uplifting the local fishing communities in Seberang Mukah, particularly in Kampung Litong, Kampung Tanjung, Kampung Bunut, and Kampung Sungai Alo.

He proposed the creation of a ‘Nelayan Park’, a sustainable project that would integrate traditional village elements, fisheries activities, and the coastal ecosystem as a form of natural capital.

“This project will not only empower the fishing community through improved infrastructure but also serve as an interactive hub for fisheries-based education, recreation, and the preservation of our maritime culture,” he said.

He bought up the matter when debating in support of the motion of appreciation to the Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s speech in the August house today.

He also drew attention to the long-delayed construction of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaa Balingian, which has been classified as a ‘sick project’.

Approved under the 10th Malaysia Plan in 2013, the school’s construction progress stands at only 20 per cent far behind the original schedule of 70 per cent.

“This delay has forced students in Balingian to travel daily to Mukah, which is not only burdensome but also affects their academic performance,” he stressed, while also calling for urgent attention to the issues facing SK Sungai Badengan.

In addition, Abdul Yakub highlighted the pressing need for a Permanent Court in Mukah and the establishment of a Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office in the district.

This concern was also raised during the Mukah District PEMADAM Annual General Meeting held on 28 April 2025, as part of efforts to address the rising number of drug-related and other criminal cases in the area.

“The absence of a Permanent Court has led to cases being tried outside the district, causing inconvenience and delays in the justice process,” he added.

He urged relevant agencies and authorities to take swift and serious action on these matters to safeguard the rights and welfare of the people of Balingian and strengthen the legal and community support systems in Mukah.
