PENANG: The Sarawak Government is strengthening basic infrastructure and modern telecommunications to support the state’s digital economic growth and enhance its semiconductor industry ecosystem.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said investments in infrastructure such as bridges, water supply and telecommunications networks are crucial to complement Sarawak’s economic transformation agenda.

“All these are related to digital economy and semiconductor development, in addition to basic infrastructure such as bridges and water supply. Of course, energy is very much needed.

“Therefore, we are working to strengthen the existing ecosystem. We already have a solid foundation and we believe that if this connection is reinforced, it will contribute to the growth of the semiconductor industry,” he told reporters after attending the Sarawak Semiconductor Investment Seminar here today.

Awang Tengah, who is also Sarawak’s International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister, said Sarawak is determined to build a complete semiconductor ecosystem by leveraging its green energy advantage and linking it with Penang’s long-established expertise in the sector.

“This collaboration will not only enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness, but also open up opportunities in R&D, talent development and expansion of the full semiconductor supply chain,” he said.

He stressed that the combined strengths of both states would make Malaysia a high-value investment destination capable of competing with neighbouring countries in the high-tech sector.
