MUKAH: Phase 3 of the Basong Water Treatment Plant is currently ahead of schedule and expected to be fully completed by September 2028.
Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi commended the progression of the construction for this plant that will cater for residents especially in the rural area.
“Fully funded by the Sarawak Government, this project involves the construction of a new water treatment plant with a capacity of 60 million litres per day (MLD), as well as the installation of an 18-kilometre raw water pipeline measuring 1,000mm in diameter.
“Upon completion, it is expected to boost the overall capacity of the water supply system in Mukah and its surrounding areas.

“Not only that, it will also help resolve long-standing water supply issues in the area,” said Julaihi.
He said this during his visit to the Basong Water Treatment Plant, along with Tellian assemblyman, Royston Valentine, this afternoon.
Phase 3 of the project is valued at approximately RM243.98 million, and was commenced in September 2025.
Furthermore, Julaihi noted that Mukah has 11 water treatment plants, with the Basong Water Treatment Plant recording the highest production capacity at 60 MLD.
He added that based on current data, the overall capacity of 60 MLD is sufficient to meet the water supply needs of Mukah Division.
“However, the government sees the need to increase production capacity to cater to growing demand in the future.
“Because of this, the government has large-scale development plans that are currently underway and will be implemented, including several infrastructure development projects in Mukah Division,” he explained.
He stressed that the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Sarawak will continue to monitor the execution of the project to ensure construction work progresses according to plan and within the stipulated timeline.
He added that this effort aligns with the Sarawak Government’s commitment to expanding water supply coverage and providing a more stable and resilient treated water supply system.
“This is for the benefit of the community across Mukah Division,” he added.
