KUCHING: Batu Kawa is strengthening its long-term flood defences through several mitigation projects involving retention ponds, improved drainage and water-pumping systems.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the projects were progressing rapidly and being implemented in phases to improve the management of excess rainwater.
He said a media site visit would be arranged after the haze subsides to provide a clearer explanation of how the different components work together.
“Once the haze settles, I plan to take the media to see the projects for themselves as there are several very important projects in Batu Kawa,” he said when met by reporters after officiating the Asia Medical Library Seminar 2026 at the Borneo Cultures Museum here on Tuesday (Sept 8).
Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, said an on-site briefing would help the public understand how the measures could reduce flood risks in the area.
“Once you understand Batu Kawa, you will understand retention ponds, how water is pumped out and how the future flood-prevention system works.”
According to an earlier report, a RM14.5 million retention pond at Lorong Desa Wira 7 has been completed, while the RM36.6 million second phase of the Desa Wira flood-mitigation project is under construction.
The Sarawak government has also allocated RM63.88 million for drainage upgrades and two retention ponds near Batu Kawa New Township and Pine Square Commercial Centre.
