SEMATAN: Visitors to Telok Melano beach are being urged to stay alert for jellyfish, following an incident where a child was stung today (Feb 13) around 9.15 am, believed to be from a poisonous species.
The Civil Defence Force (APM) said that the Telok Melano beach lifeguards quickly administered immediate first aid to the child before being taken to the Sematan health clinic for further treatment.
In response to this event, authorities are advising the public to be cautious during their visits to the beach, given the risk posed by potentially harmful jellyfish.
Beachgoers who encounter jellyfish are urged to immediately inform the beach lifeguards.
For those stung by a jellyfish, it’s recommended to rinse the affected area with vinegar to neutralise the venom, remove tentacles with tweezers or gloves to avoid additional stings, and immerse the area in hot water (between hot and scalding) for 20 to 45 minutes to ease pain and deactivate toxins.
Individuals are advised against rubbing the sting site, applying ice or alcohol, as these actions can exacerbate symptoms. Medical attention should be sought if symptoms persist or in cases of severe reactions, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or signs of an allergic reaction.
