As demand for healthier food grows, AcaiFlow co-founders Chinee Ann Teo and Anson Pan hope to make nutritious eating more enjoyable while encouraging a balanced approach to wellness and sustainability.

Rethinking healthy eating, one bowl at a time

AS information about our health floats easily these days, people have become more conscious of their health. Sitting down at the newly opened AcaiFlow at Voco Hotel, Kuching, the queue to pay for lunch does not seem to get any shorter.

It was then that we knew that many Kuchingites have learned that eating healthily in the long run does pay the price. But how long can one continue to practise a healthy eating lifestyle? AcaiFlow co-founder, Chinee Ann Teo, shared the same sentiment.

A health-conscious eater herself, she knew what it meant to be eating the same bland but healthy food every day. The colours on her plate are often dull and unattractive.

“But eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring,” she thought.

Together with her partner, Anson Pan, Chinee established AcaiFlow in 2025, with their first branch being at the Green Heights Mall Kuching. In creating a fun yet healthy menu, they claimed that eating healthy does not always have to be boring, and it can be fun too.

“We believe that a person is what they are based on what they eat. Through this holistic approach to wellness eating, we helped curate a menu which can help them in different ways. From sleeping well to achieving pretty skin, food can help us in ways we can never imagine,” Chinee shared.

At the core of their curated menu is the expertise of a nutritionist and dietitian, with whom they work closely to achieve this. From an acai bowl to their health bowls, Chinee and Anson aimed to offer healthy food that people would eventually love to continue eating.

From a wider perspective

But since eating varies among different individuals, as each would have their own likes, dislikes and allergies, they decided to make everything from scratch, with consideration for their different consumers.

“Our acai is imported from Brazil. Made organically from acai berries, we serve it like a sorbet. Our toppings, such as almond butter and peanut butter, are also made from scratch. With this, we hope to make our ingredients natural and healthy for people,” Chinee revealed.

Coffee is also available at the outlet.

She added that what they thought of AcaiFlow was the same as their thoughts about making food for their family.

“Our menus are something that we eat, as do our family members. When we curate them, we often think, would we offer this to our family too?”

In the kitchen, they would also use minimal flavour enhancers, allowing the natural flavours of the ingredients to shine through.

Chinee has also brought a taste of her Filipino heritage to AcaiFlow, incorporating familiar dishes from her home cuisine into the menu while staying true to the brand’s emphasis on wholesome eating.

Beyond promoting healthier eating, AcaiFlow also seeks to support local communities and small-scale producers, whose contributions can sometimes be overlooked.

“For me, sustainability is important, and it is always the local community that needs support most. They are the people working behind the big brands, but sometimes they are overlooked,” Chinee said.

The brand sources cacao nibs from local farmers in Davao, the Philippines, while its coconut bowls are purchased from local crafters in Cotabato to support their livelihoods.

It also works with Adeva to give used coffee grounds from AcaiFlow a second life by turning them into coffee scrubs, offering a way to repurpose waste rather than simply discard it.

For Chinee, these efforts reflect the importance of building a business that goes beyond serving customers by supporting communities, valuing local craftsmanship and making more sustainable choices.

Wellness beyond the plate

Beyond nutrition, Chinee believes that maintaining good health also involves getting enough sleep, managing stress, staying physically active and looking after one’s mental and emotional wellbeing.

She said people often become so caught up with work and daily responsibilities that they overlook the importance of taking care of themselves.

“Sometimes, even something as simple as taking time to unwind or getting a massage can help us relax and release some of the tension we carry. For me, being healthy means feeling good physically and mentally, not just eating healthy food,” she said.

She also highlighted the importance of understanding one’s nutritional needs, noting that having the right knowledge about food choices could help individuals work towards their specific health goals.

Chinee added that physical activity, rest and everyday habits worked together in maintaining overall wellbeing. While staying active was important, the body also needed sufficient time to rest and recover.

From choosing healthier meals and drinking enough water to getting adequate sleep, she believes that small, consistent habits can make a difference over time.

Wholesome food bowl options reflect the brand’s aim to offer healthy yet fun food choices.

“You don’t have to change your entire lifestyle overnight. Small, consistent habits can go a long way,” she said.

She observed that people sometimes placed too much emphasis on losing weight, eating clean or exercising, while overlooking other aspects of their health, including stress levels, sleep quality, energy and emotional wellbeing.

“We tend to think that being healthy is all about how we look, but there’s so much more to it,” she highlighted.

For Chinee, a balanced approach to wellness means making healthier choices without putting unnecessary pressure on oneself. This could be as simple as going for a walk, discovering a new hobby or enjoying a relaxing massage after a long week.

Ultimately, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not about following a perfect routine, but finding one that can be sustained over time. From being mindful of what goes onto the plate to making time for rest and relaxation, wellness is shaped by the everyday choices people make.

As Chinee believes, taking care of oneself should not become another burden in an already busy life. Sometimes, it begins with small changes, a little more balance and the willingness to slow down when needed.

After all, living well is not simply about adding more years to life, but making the most of the years we have.
