BINTULU: Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) has reaffirmed its commitment to the sustainability agenda with the launch of a series of green initiatives aimed at accelerating the transition towards low-carbon port operations.
BPHB’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Ruslan Abdul Ghani, said sustainability is no longer viewed merely as a compliance requirement but has become a core component of the company’s operations and long-term strategy.
“BPHB is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 in line with Sarawak’s aspirations under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“Our sustainability efforts are guided by the EESG framework and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).
“Sustainability is embedded in our operations, not just a compliance requirement. We remain committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” he said during the launch of the BPHB Sustainability and Green Initiative here on Friday (June 19) as reported by TVS.
Among the key initiatives unveiled are the deployment of two electric reach stackers, seven hybrid rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, and the expansion of electric terminal tractors (TTTs) following the successful completion of an initial trial phase.
Ruslan said BPHB is also implementing a phased rollout of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, beginning with an initial capacity of approximately 150 kilowatt-hours, while the second phase is expected to reach 400 kilowatt-peak next year.
He said the company has also introduced 15 electric motorcycles for pilot testing purposes and is gradually replacing a significant portion of its operational fleet with electric vehicles, supported by dedicated charging facilities.
“In addition, we are exploring the use of electric and hydrogen-powered tugboats, as well as the establishment of a hydrogen refuelling station with an initial capacity of 10 kilograms per day through strategic collaboration with technology partners from China,” he added.
Ruslan said these initiatives are aimed at positioning Bintulu Port not only as a key trade gateway but also as a catalyst for sustainable and innovative port operations in the region.
“By integrating renewable energy, operational electrification and system modernisation, we are laying the foundation for a more efficient, sustainable and future-ready port,” he stressed.
