KUCHING: Traffic across the city is expected to be heavily disrupted this weekend, with police announcing extensive road closures and diversions at 31 locations for the Sarawak Energy Marathon 2026.
The phased traffic operations will begin this Saturday (Aug 8) and continue until Sunday morning (Aug 9), when thousands of local and international runners are expected to take part in the annual marathon.
Kuching Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the road closures and diversions are necessary to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth running of the event.
Hence, the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division will be implementing road closures and diversions at 31 key locations across the city.
The first phase will be enforced from 8 am on Aug 8 until 10 am on Aug 9, covering roads around the Sarawak Energy headquarters and Jalan Isthmus.
The second phase, involving more extensive closures throughout the city centre, will take effect from 12 am to 8 am on Aug 9.
Roads affected include Jalan Pelabuhan, Jalan Datuk Merican Salleh, Jalan Pending, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Satok, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Kulas, Jalan Astana, Lebuh Temple, Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakob, Jalan Stadium, Jalan Casuarina, Jalan Diplomatik, Jalan Masja, Jalan Hasyim Jaafar, Jalan Merdeka, Jalan Muhibbah, Jalan Haji Mataim, Jalan Ajibah Abol, Jalan Market, Jalan Gambier, Jalan Abell, Jalan Abang Abd Rahim, Lorong Sebor, Jalan Kwong Lee Bank and Jalan Merbau.
Alexson urged motorists to avoid parking on road shoulders as it could block emergency access and aggravate traffic congestion.
Members of the public are advised to plan their journeys in advance, use alternative routes and cooperate with police officers and traffic personnel stationed along the affected roads.
