BINTULU: The introduction of the ‘Bravery Medal’ at the 6th Malaysia Special Olympics National Games Sarawak 2026 recognises the courage of athletes with special needs competing on the national stage.
Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the medal is awarded to all participating athletes as a token of appreciation for their efforts and fighting spirit, regardless of competition results.
She said the medal is given to all participating athletes as a symbol of recognition for their courage to take part.
“In line with the Special Olympics (SO) spirit, ‘Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt’, every participating athlete is a hero and should be celebrated,” she said.
She said this in her speech at the opening ceremony of the Games, which was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, at the Bintulu Civic Centre on Saturday night (Apr 25).
According to Fatimah, the awarding of the ‘Bravery Medal’ reflects an inclusive approach that emphasises courage, self-confidence and determination among athletes with special needs.
“The courage to try, step out of one’s comfort zone and give one’s best is the true victory that goes beyond any medal,” she said.
She added that the initiative is also expected to raise public awareness to better appreciate the abilities of persons with disabilities and to support efforts to empower them through sports and community activities.
A total of 11 contingents from across the country involving 708 participants, comprising 422 athletes with special needs, 67 unified partners and 219 delegates including coaches, contingent officials and volunteers, are taking part in the Games that is being held from 24 to 26 April.
