KAPIT: A proposed road and bridge project linking Nanga Belawai to the Song-Kapit road is expected to improve connectivity and accessibility for communities in the area.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project would complete the Song-Kapit road network and reduce the community’s dependence on river transport.

The project involves the construction of a 2.8km road, two bridges and the upgrading of junctions.

“For residents of Nanga Belawai and the surrounding areas, this project carries great significance because it is directly linked to daily connectivity, travel safety and access to economic opportunities and basic services.

“For many years, reliance on river transport has been part of the reality of life for the local community.

“My presence at the tender briefing and site visit today reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the people’s needs continue to be addressed through better and more sustainable infrastructure,” he said in a Facebook post following a tender briefing and site visit for the project earlier today (June 16).

Nanta said the project scope included a 550m bridge across Batang Rajang and a 160m bridge across Sungai Belawai.

The scope also includes slope protection, geotechnical and electrical works, as well as the upgrading of two junctions.

Nanta also stressed that the procurement process would be conducted transparently and fairly.

He expressed hope that participating companies would submit competitive proposals based on technical capability, quality and value for money.

“This project is not merely about building roads and bridges.

“It is an investment in the future of the people of Kapit by connecting communities, creating economic opportunities and strengthening rural development in Sarawak,” he said.
