KUCHING: Visitor numbers from Brunei to Sarawak may slightly dwindle this month due to recent flooding events.
“We typically see between 150,000 to 200,000 visitors from Brunei each month, and while the floods may cause a slight reduction, the tourism industry has not been significantly affected,” Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told reporters at the 2025 Sarawak Youth and Sports Grant Handover Ceremony in the Baitulmakmur Building II today.
The Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development reassured the public that floodwaters have receded, and although areas like Bintulu, Miri, Bekenu, and Sibuti were more severely affected, any road damage is being promptly addressed by the relevant agencies.
While he acknowledged the possibility of a small dip in tourist arrivals from Brunei, he emphasised that the overall impact on the tourism sector remains minimal.
He also highlighted that environmental challenges such as floods, fires, and earthquakes are not unique to Sarawak but part of a wider global trend.
“This is a global phenomenon, and we just have to face it, hoping that these events don’t occur too frequently in our country,” he concluded
