BETONG: Bukit Sadok has been earmarked for an integrated tourism development plan aimed at turning the historic site into a key attraction in the area.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the proposal would introduce longhouse-based tourism and supporting visitor facilities, building on the area’s strong Iban heritage.

He said the plan is intended to position Bukit Sadok as a leading destination in Betong while creating economic opportunities for surrounding communities.

“Planning must be done properly so the development can draw visitors and bring real benefits to the people here,” he said at the flag-off of the 2026 Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak Bukit Sadok Expedition on Sunday (May 10), according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

The expedition, organised by Betong PWD with Sarawak PWD, involved 151 participants from several divisions, including Betong, Mukah, Sibu, Sarikei, Sri Aman, Kota Samarahan, Serian and Kuching.

Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, said Bukit Sadok carries significant historical value as the former stronghold of Iban warrior Rentap during resistance against the Brooke administration.

He said the construction of a replica fortress at the site would help preserve the legacy for future generations.

At the same time, he supported continued exploration of forest areas in a way that aligns with sustainable development efforts.

He urged PWD to provide feedback from the expedition to help identify tourism potential and areas that require improvement moving forward.
