KUCHING: The tourism project at Bung Sadong is set to move forward after earlier objections to its access road were resolved, paving the way for development to begin.

Serian District Council (SDC) chairman Datuk Peter Minos said two landowners who had previously objected to the proposed access route have now agreed to cooperate, removing a key obstacle that had delayed the project.

“With no more objections, the Public Works Department is now proceeding with the work on the access road,” he said, expressing optimism that construction progress will gather pace in the coming months.

Minos noted that once the work is completed—targeted for July or August—the next phase involving the development of a base camp will commence.

The base camp is expected to serve as the operational and visitor hub for the area.

“It will include a reception hall, an administrative office and a promotional office,” he said, adding that plans are also in place for the construction of several chalets and possibly a canteen to accommodate visitors.

If timelines proceed as expected, the project could be officially launched by the end of the year, marking a significant milestone in efforts to promote eco-tourism in the Serian division.

The initiative is backed by a RM13.5 million allocation secured by SDC through the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), with support from Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada.

Bung Sadong has attracted increasing attention in recent years from hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, but limited accessibility and lack of facilities have constrained its growth as a tourism hotspot.

Minos reiterated that resolving the land issue is critical to ensuring the project moves forward, warning that continued delays could result in missed opportunities for local economic development and community benefit.

Bung Sadong, a hill near Kampung Ta-ee, is widely regarded as one of the region’s hidden natural gems.

Dominated by the majestic Mount Sadong, the area boasts lush tropical rainforest, diverse flora and fauna, and scenic river landscapes that have long attracted nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Despite its natural appeal, limited accessibility has historically constrained tourism development in Bung Sadong.

The construction of a proper access road is therefore seen as a crucial step in unlocking its potential as a sustainable tourism destination.

Minos believes the project will not only enhance visitor experience but also create economic opportunities for nearby communities through job creation and small business ventures.

He emphasises that the development would be carried out with sensitivity to the environment, ensuring that Bung Sadong’s pristine ecosystem is preserved while allowing for responsible tourism growth.

“With improved infrastructure and proper planning, Bung Sadong can become a key attraction in Serian and contribute to the broader tourism landscape of Sarawak,” he said.
