KUCHING: Selangau residents are concerned about the status of significant infrastructure projects in their constituency.

Its Member of Parliament (MP) Edwin Banta said these projects included several water treatment plant projects and solar panel installation projects in numerous schools.

Urging a prompt response, he stated, “I once again implore that the Stapang, Selangau, and Sangan water treatment plants, announced in 2016, be expedited without further delay.”

He said this during Mid-Term Review (MTR) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) in Parliament yesterday (Sept 15).

The urgency stems from a pressing need for clean drinking water, particularly in Kelawit, where contamination of water sources has become a severe issue due to nearby development activities.

Expressing hope that the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development would take swift action, Edwin proposed distributing tanks to affected longhouse communities as a temporary solution to their water supply woes.

He also highlighted another project that had languished due to a lack of decisive action — the installation of solar panel systems in several schools, including Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sg. Arau, Rumah (Rh) Uban, Rh Anding, Rh Sandom, and Rh Ampa in Ulu Mukah, Selangau.

He said these systems were initiated in 2016 but remained uncompleted, leaving students without access to sustainable electricity.

“The villagers are wondering about the status of both of these projects and the executing agencies involved,” he added.

On the other hand, he said he had previously requested the provision of smart televisions in all rural schools within Selangau earlier this year.

“To strengthen the teaching and learning system at the primary school level in remote areas, smart televisions are essential,” he stressed.
