KUCHING: Canada’s Senior Trade Commissioner Ryan Berg led a delegation to meet Sarawak Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, expressing keen interest in furthering collaboration between Canada and Sarawak, particularly in the transport sector and strengthening the transport industry.

According to Lee, the visit aimed to build upon the fruitful discussions initiated during Sarawak’s delegation visit to Canada in September 2023.

He provided an overview of Sarawak’s transportation industry, highlighting key projects such as the Kuching Urban Transport System (KUTS), the establishment of a new Sarawak airline, and the proposed development of a new Kuching International Airport.

He emphasised opportunities in aircraft parts manufacturing, aerospace engineering, drones, and human capital development, expressing hope for Canada’s support in these areas.

Meanwhile, Berg stressed Canada’s visa requirements for foreign nationals and assured assistance through their High Commission Office in Kuala Lumpur for any issues faced by government officers or businesses. He pledged to explore future planning, cooperation opportunities, and potential investments between Sarawak and Canada.

The Ministry of Transport Sarawak looks forward to potential partnerships, joint ventures, knowledge exchange, and training initiatives to advance Sarawak’s aviation and maritime industries.

Lee was accompanied by his permanent secretary Datu Wong Hieng Seng and members of the MOTS Aviation Division team.

The delegation included Trade Commissioners Azhar Ali, Yamunah Kandasamy, Noorkhairul Aliza, Nanee Muniandy, and Thomas Chan from De Havilland Aircraft of Canada.
