KUCHING: A commercial vehicle enforcement operation along Jalan Setia Raja here on Tuesday, led to the arrest of a lorry driver after police found suspected cannabis in his possession.
The 20-year-old was detained during an integrated operation carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division together with the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) between 9.30 am and 11 am.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said police discovered three plastic packets of various sizes containing compressed dried leaves believed to be cannabis, weighing a total of 17.5g, inside a brown sling bag worn by the suspect.
“The suspected drugs were seized and the suspect was arrested under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
“An initial urine screening found the suspect positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis,” he said.
He was later brought before the Magistrate’s Court, which granted a four-day remand until July 11 to facilitate further investigations.
Alexson said the integrated operation was conducted to ensure commercial vehicle drivers complied with traffic laws and to detect those driving under the influence of drugs.
Throughout the operation, a total of 60 individuals and 55 vehicles were inspected, with police issuing 16 traffic summonses for various offences.
He advised road users to obey traffic regulations, drive responsibly and stay away from drug abuse to help ensure the safety of all road users.
