MIRI: A 23-year-old man’s CCTV footage proved crucial in helping police identify and arrest a suspect allegedly involved in the theft of two car rims from outside a house in Krokop.
The theft was reported to police at about 8.27pm on Sept 18 after the complainant discovered that two of his car rims, which had been left outside his house in Kampung Sungai Baong, were missing.
Police said the complainant noticed the loss at about 7am that day and subsequently checked CCTV footage from his home.
The footage allegedly showed a man, known to the complainant, removing the two rims at about 2am.
The complainant promptly contacted police, resulting in the suspect’s arrest and detention for investigation.
Police investigations by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of IPD Miri subsequently led officers to a scrap metal shop in Tudan.
At about 2pm on Sept 19, police recovered both stolen rims from the premises. Investigations found that the items had allegedly been sold by the suspect.
The suspect has been remanded for three days until Sept 22 to assist investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
The offence carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Police commended the complainant for his vigilance and prompt cooperation, particularly in reviewing the CCTV footage and reporting the matter to police.
The case remains under investigation.
