KUCHING: Public safety surveillance capabilities at Jalan Arang have been improved with an AI-powered CCTV Smart Safety Initiative.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said a total of six poles and 18 CCTV cameras have been built and installed to increase public safety.

There are six locations upgraded with these CCTV cameras, namely at Jalan Dogan, Jalan Arang, Jalan Arang 15C, 3rd Mili Market, Jalan Burung Lilin and SJK Chung Hua Batu 4.

“As I was briefed by the project manager on this, the security around these areas have been improved, and this security system is developed by our own people.

“Which means we can maintain and operate by our own and it will not be a problem.

“So, it is very convenient and we do not need any specialist like from Kuala Lumpur to come here and fix our problem,” he said.

He said this during a press conference at one of the CCTV camera poles located in front of SMK Arang Road, Tuesday morning.

Lo also shared that he had pursued for the installation of security cameras especially in residential areas within his constituency back in 2018.

He added that there were challenges along the way especially in maintaining and operating the CCTV cameras.

“Today, I am glad we have sorted this out and the installation of the cameras have been completed and operational.

“Now, this will be handed over to the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) where all CCTV feeds are integrated with the Sarawak Integrated Operations Centre (SIOC) under it,” said Lo.

Lo also has plans to install CCTV cameras in other areas within his constituency in the future.

“We have done it in the Jalan Arang area. We are looking to install the cameras in other areas as well to improve security.

“For now, we are taking it one step at a time. For now, we will have to add more neighbourhood watch committees.

“We are looking to set up the neighbourhood watch committees at the 3rd Mile area, 6th Mile area as well as in 10th Mile area.

“I encourage all residents in Batu Kitang constituency to come and work together to keep our area safe to prevent any public inconvenience,” he said.

Lo also presented an allocation of RM300,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) for the improvement of the CCTV cameras to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
