KUCHING: The official Asean Heritage Park (AHP) certificates for Bako National Park and Lambir Hills National Park will be formally presented in November during the 8th Asean Heritage Parks Conference in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam.

The recognition places both Sarawak parks among the most treasured protected areas in the Asean region, joining Gunung Mulu National Park which was designated as an AHP in 1984.

Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) said the achievement reaffirmed Sarawak’s strong commitment to conservation while showcasing the state’s exceptional biodiversity and unique ecosystems.

“This recognition celebrates Sarawak’s exceptional biodiversity, unique ecosystems and our strong commitment to conservation, placing our national parks among the most treasured protected areas in the Asean region,” SFC said in a Facebook post.

With the addition of Bako and Lambir Hills, Sarawak now has three Asean Heritage Parks under its belt. The nomination for the two parks was confirmed earlier this year.

Last week, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) announced that Bako and Lambir, together with the Tengku Hassanal Wildlife Reserve in Pahang, were recognised as Asean Heritage Parks during the 18th Asean Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME-18) in Langkawi, Kedah, chaired by Acting Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
