SERIAN: The Rotary Club of Kuching Central, Malaysian Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Rotaract Club of Swinburne Sarawak and Segi College have recently initiated the Borneo Flood Relief-Serian project.
The project was initiatied following the devastating floods in Serian and a communityy survey and direct communicaton between president Roland Phang, local authorities, and the flood victims at the temporary relief centre (PPS) in Kampung Tanah Putih, which revealed the critical need for basic household items such as mattresses and pillows.
On the ground assessments confirmed widespread damage, with homes submerged, families displaced and possessions destroyed.
“The participating clubs, along with generous donation from Rotary clubs in Singapore, Johor, Malacca and Brunei have come together to provide 516 mattresses and 1,032 pillows to the affected families.
“These essential items are meant to offer comfort and support during the recovery process, helping families regain some stability, as they begin to rebuild their homes and lives.
“This could also alleviate some of their financial burden in replacing their destroyed household items,” Rotary Club said in its press statement.
The NGO added that the handover of the items took place at Serian Service Centre as a symbolic gesture, with distribution to the confirmed beneficiaries to follow soon.
“We are planning to personall participate in the distribution once the schedule is finalised.
“Our collective effort shows the power of collaboration in times of crisis, ensuring a swift and comprehensive response to the disaster and providing hope to those affected,” it added.
