MIRI: Industry collaboration is crucial in preparing local talent to meet the evolving demands of Sarawak’s oil and gas sector, said Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala.

Speaking through Miri mayor and Pujut assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang, at the Sarawak Oil and Gas Workers Association (SOGWA) Career Expo, Gerawat highlighted the importance of partnerships between industry players, government agencies, and educational institutions in ensuring the sector’s long-term sustainability.

The expo, held at the Miri Industrial Training Institute (ILP), featured participation from 32 oil and gas companies, with eight conducting direct job interviews.

The event served as a platform for employment opportunities, job matching, skills development, and the creation of a self-sustaining talent pool within Sarawak.

“The oil and gas industry remains a fundamental pillar of Sarawak’s economy, playing a significant role in its growth and development,” Gerawat said.

“However, to ensure its long-term sustainability, we must nurture and empower our local workforce.”

He emphasised the need to reduce reliance on external expertise by equipping young talents with the necessary skills, knowledge, and opportunities. Employers and training institutions, he added, play a vital role in strengthening Sarawak’s workforce through investment in training, upskilling, and knowledge transfer.

Gerawat also encouraged companies to support initiatives such as the “Train & Place” programme, currently run by PETROS, which provides trained personnel ready for employment in the industry.

Also present at the event was SOGWA chairman, Jamal Abdullah.
