LUNDU: Newly appointed community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) must immediately take responsibility, adapt quickly and deliver results for their communities without delay, said Opar assemblyman, Billy Sujang.

He said grassroots leaders play a critical role in driving development initiatives and addressing local issues from the outset of their appointments.

“Every leader must quickly adapt, be proactive in applying for projects and resolve the people’s problems,” he said when officiating the ‘Leadership Strengthening Course for KMKK of N1 Opar 2026’ event at the Mini Auditorium of the Lundu District Council on Wednesday.

Billy also called on the KMKK in the Opar constituency to play a more active and effective role in supporting development efforts in Lundu and its surrounding areas.

He emphasised that grassroots leaders must be present at official programmes, particularly those involving visits by elected representatives or the handover of development projects, noting that their absence could raise concerns among the public.

“As leaders, do not disappear without notice. If you are out of the area or on leave, inform the community or the penghulu so that you can be contacted easily in case of emergencies,” he said.

He further reminded them not to allow political differences to hinder development initiatives that benefit rural communities.

On development plans, Billy revealed that the Metropolitan Food Cluster Sarawak (MFCS) project spanning 894 hectares is expected to generate about 5,600 job opportunities when fully operational.

“The project will include modern agriculture such as greenhouse cultivation of sweet tomatoes, as well as poultry and cattle farming for export purposes, in addition to downstream industries related to animal feed,” he said.

He also highlighted a proposal to position Lundu as an aerospace hub through the development of a satellite launch centre and collaboration with industry players, creating employment opportunities for local graduates.

At the event, 10 KMKK received their reappointment letters, while another 10 individuals were presented with Certificates of Recognition as Sarawak Bumiputera.
