MERADONG: The Health Promotion and Awareness Programme has been recognised as an effective platform to raise public awareness on dengue prevention while fostering a stronger sense of social responsibility among local residents.

Organised by the Maradong and Julau District Council (MDMJ), the programme, part of the Community Engagement Programme under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), was officiated by Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing at Rumah Edmund Labang, Sungai Tulai, here yesterday (Sept 6).

Ding emphasised the importance of continuous efforts by the community in combating dengue and maintaining a clean and safe living environment.

“I urge that this programme should not end here but instead mark the start of a lasting change in attitude. Let us all commit to making our villages and longhouses not only clean and cheerful today but also beautiful, well-organised, prosperous and safe at all times,” he said.

The programme featured various activities, including fogging operations conducted a day earlier at Rumah Panjang Edmund Labang, free health screenings, and service counters provided by MDMJ, PERKESO, EPF and the Welfare Department.

Several awareness talks were also held, covering topics such as Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) management by the Meradong District Office, online scam prevention by the Meradong District Police, river cleanliness by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sibu, river safety by the Sarawak Rivers Board, and dengue control by the Meradong District Health Office.

In addition, Ding presented a Special Rural Small Project (MRP) Grant worth RM3,000 to the JKKK Women’s Bureau of Rumah Edmund Labang to support their 2025 annual activities.
