MIRI: Authorities here are stepping up the fight against illegal moneylending with an operation to tear down unlicensed ‘Ah Long’ advertisements across the district and residential areas.

The operation, which ran from 9 am to 3 pm on Wednesday, involved the Miri Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) and the Miri City Council (MCC).

They scoured the streets and tore down banners, stickers and advertising cards promoting illegal loans.

By the end of the operation, police and MCC had seized various advertisements linked to 23 different phone numbers, suspected of belonging to unlicensed moneylenders.

In light of this, members of the public are urged to steer clear of such moneylending activities.

Anyone with information on commercial crime activities is encouraged to contact the Miri district police headquarters (IPD) operations room at 085-432533.

The public is reminded that dealing with ‘Ah Long’ can lead to financial ruin and even threats of violence.

Unlicensed lenders often prey on desperate individuals, offering easy cash but trapping them in cycles of crippling debt.
