KUCHING: A local man was arrested after he was allegedly caught engaging in illegal street racing during a late-night police operation along Jalan Astana.
The arrest was made during ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division between 11.30 pm last night and 3 am today (July 19) near the Petronas station.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the 22-year-old was detained for allegedly committing an offence under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless and dangerous riding.
Besides the arrest, his motorcycle was also seized for further action.
The traffic operation, involving a senior police officer and 11 personnel, was aimed at curbing illegal street racing and ensuring compliance with traffic laws.
Throughout the operation, traffic police inspected 92 individuals and 80 motorcycles.
They also impounded 24 motorcycles under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 and issued a total of 129 summonses for various traffic offences.
Alexson urged the public to obey traffic laws, stay away from illegal street racing, avoid unauthorised vehicle modifications and refrain from dangerous driving or riding.
