KUCHING: Cosplay is not merely a hobby but a performing art that demands imagination, creativity and strong commitment, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said cosplay participants do more than don costumes – they bring characters to life through their own creativity and imagination.
“Cosplay is not just a hobby, it is a performing art,” he said when officiating the Cosplay Competition under Kuching Festival 2026 here on Saturday night (Jul 25).
He said participants invest considerable time and effort into crafting their costumes, accessories and character details, reflecting a high level of creativity and dedication.
The characters portrayed draw from anime, manga, video games, films and comics, requiring participants to use their imagination to bring each character to life, he said.
Dr Sim said the event demonstrates that Sarawak’s youth possess talent worth showcasing, while also reflecting the spirit of unity among the state’s communities.
He said cosplay serves as a platform that unites people of different races through shared interest, creativity and a collective passion for the craft.
“So, you are not just wearing wings and costumes. You are actually helping build Sarawak,” he said.
Dr Sim added that participating in official events like this opens doors for participants to represent Sarawak on bigger stages, including internationally in the state’s sister cities abroad.
He said the value of taking part should not be measured by cash prizes alone, but by the opportunities, experience and recognition gained.
“This is not just about the cash prize. This is a celebration of our imagination, talent and friendship.
“Most importantly, it proves that Sarawak’s children are capable of doing just as well as anyone else,” he said.
