KUCHING: A crane that toppled onto two houses in Lorong Stutong Baru 4 has raised serious safety concerns over construction activities near residential areas.
Kuching South Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, said the incident occurred on Feb 12 at a nearby construction site, where the crane collapsed and fell onto two neighbouring homes.
He later visited the site to assess the situation on the ground and understand the extent of the damage.
To ensure proper engineering procedures were followed, Wee sought the assistance of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sarawak.
During the visit, IEM Sarawak chairwoman, Angelia Liew San Chuin, and vice-chairman, Edison Lim Kim Ong, accompanied Wee, acting Kuching South City Secretary, Wong Ming Kong, and officers from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to inspect the site.
The engineers advised that any determination regarding the structural integrity and habitability of the affected houses must be based on a formal assessment conducted by an independently appointed Structural Professional Engineer with a Practising Certificate registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia.
They also emphasised the need for proper documentation and certification for all rectification works to ensure long-term safety and regulatory compliance.
Although no injuries were reported, both houses sustained damage, particularly to their roof structures.
The developer has since begun repair works on the affected properties.
According to a press statement, Wee said MBKS views the matter seriously as it involves public safety and damage to private property.
“Public safety is our highest priority. There can be no compromise when it comes to safety compliance at construction sites within our jurisdiction,” he added.
He stressed that developers and contractors must strictly adhere to all safety requirements, especially for construction works located near residential areas.
Wee also expressed appreciation to IEM Sarawak for its prompt response and professional support in reinforcing proper engineering procedures.
MBKS expects full cooperation from the developer and all relevant parties to facilitate a thorough investigation.
He added that the affected residents must receive a fair, transparent and timely resolution.
MBKS will continue to monitor the situation closely and will not hesitate to take firm action should there be any non-compliance with safety regulations.
