SIBU: Cybersecurity and scam prevention are crucial in today’s digital era, especially amid the widespread use of social media and rapid technological advancement, says Sibu Rural District Councillor Kevin Lau.

Lau stressed that in a highly connected and open online environment, users must be vigilant in protecting their personal information and exercising caution when interacting with strangers.

“Do not easily accept contact from unknown individuals. Keep your personal data, such as your identity card number, secure,” he said this in his speech during the Jiwa@Komuniti Madani on Cybersecurity and Scam Prevention Talk at Sibu Chung Cheng Primary School, here today.

He also urged the public to verify the authenticity of online content before sharing it, warning that misinformation could cause harm if widely circulated.

“People must be wise and use their judgement to decide whether this content or news is true and reliable.

“If something is not true or reliable, don’t forward it, not only to protect ourselves, but also those around us,” he said.

Lau expressed hope that cybersecurity awareness would continue to spread through talks such as this, enabling families, friends, and the wider community to remain alert and safe online.

“By doing so, everyone can protect themselves and others, and together build a healthier, more positive online world,” he said.
