KUCHING: A campaign promoting safer cycling habits and greater awareness among road users was among the highlights of the 2026 Kuching Car Free Morning (KCFM) programme.
Held last Sunday (May 17), the programme organised by Kuching North City Commission also featured the five-kilometre “Let’s Share The Road: Fun Ride” recreational cycling event through a collaboration between the Sarawak Cycling Association and Kuching Division Cycling Association, attracting around 100 cyclists.
According to Kuching Division Cycling Association president Irawan Sudarsono, awareness programmes such as this are important in educating the cycling community to always prioritise safety while on the road.
He said cyclists should practise defensive riding and remain alert to their surroundings, including the presence of cars and motorcycles.
“We also advise all cyclists to comply with road regulations, including traffic lights, roundabouts and when crossing roads, to avoid accidents between cyclists and other road users,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating the flag-off ceremony, which was also witnessed by DBKU Community Services Department deputy director Rudzaimeir Malek.
Irawan added that safety concerns involving cyclists are not new and have continued to be raised over the years.
In this regard, he said the awareness campaign conducted together with DBKU is part of an ongoing initiative to educate the public and improve road safety awareness among cyclists and motorists.
Apart from the fun ride, the programme also featured recreational activities such as aerodance, walking and jogging.
Members of the public also benefited from the “Health Awareness and Screening” programme by Normah Medical Specialist Centre, which provided free health screenings.
Meanwhile, the Kuching Divisional Health Office, in collaboration with DBKU, organised awareness exhibitions on rabies and dengue fever to educate the public on preventive measures and environmental cleanliness.
The programme, held from 6.00 am to 10.00 am, formed part of DBKU’s efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, reduce carbon emissions and encourage more inclusive and environmentally friendly use of urban spaces.
