GEDONG: Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Director-General, Datuk Dr Hazami Jahari, has described the ‘Malam Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa’ programme held here as a meaningful platform to strengthen the role of the Malay language.
The programme was held in conjunction with DBP’s 70th anniversary celebration and formed part of its ongoing efforts to bring language and literature closer to the grassroots.
Speaking at the programme, he expressed gratitude for the successful organisation of the programme and acknowledged the support of Datuk Seri Mohd Naroden Majais, local authorities, schools and volunteers who contributed to the celebration.
He said the programme was part of DBP’s continued efforts to bring language and literature closer to the grassroots, while introducing the agency’s role in upholding Malay language as the national language.
He noted that Gedong was chosen not only because of its growing potential for development, but also to provide greater exposure and opportunities for students in the area.
“Only through education and knowledge can we transform ourselves and strengthen the position of the national language properly,” he said.
Being from Gedong, Hazami said the programme carried personal significance as part of his contribution to his hometown, adding that DBP remains committed to supporting local communities through educational and literary initiatives.
During his speech, he also pledged to contribute additional books to villages in Gedong, including Kampung Gedong and Kampung Lubok Punggol, to enrich reading materials for the community.
He added that DBP will continue expanding language, cultural and literacy programmes across Sarawak to nurture a stronger reading and writing culture among the younger generation.
