KUCHING: The electrocution incident that killed a Form Four student in Daro is under investigation.
The Sarawak Education Department has initiated an internal safety review.
The department also conveyed its condolences to the family of the victim, identified as Fahrin Jumandy Abdullah, and pledged assistance.
It said its immediate focus is to support the family and ensure the welfare of another student who is receiving treatment.
“The area has been cordoned off and students, teachers and staff are not allowed to approach the site until it is confirmed safe,” it said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Igan MP Ahmad Johnie Zawawi described the incident as deeply concerning and said he would raise the matter in Parliament on Jun 22.
He said he would inform Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek to ensure immediate action is taken to safeguard school communities.
Ahmad Johnie said the incident pointed to broader issues involving ageing infrastructure in Sarawak schools, including risks linked to electrical wiring systems.
“Dilapidated schools are not only about old buildings and lack of facilities. The Education Ministry must also ensure that electrical wiring systems are safe at all times,” he said.
He added that some schools still use electrical wiring that is more than 15 years old and require urgent attention.
He urged the ministry to carry out a comprehensive audit of all schools to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The incident involved three male students at the school’s ablution area, where one was found unresponsive after an apparent electrical shock.
Police were alerted to the case at about 8pm.
The 16-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another 15-year-old student sustained serious injuries and was taken to Daro Hospital before being referred to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Sibu Hospital.
A third student escaped injuries.
