KUCHING: Despite battling multiple health issues, including schizophrenia, a 65-year-old woman continues to live independently in a small hut built by her brother at Kampung Sui here.
Chai Lee Sze, a former coffeeshop worker who once rented a room in Satok, has lived on her own for most of her life.
However, her life took a turn in 2023 when she underwent gastric surgery. It was during this period that doctors diagnosed her with schizophrenia with cluster B personality traits.
Since then, her health has deteriorated rapidly. Apart from her mental illness, Chai also suffers from diabetes, kidney problems, and uses a stoma bag.
Hope Place said that to ensure she has a place to stay, her brother built a small one-room hut near their parents’ home.
“The simple dwelling includes a sleeping and kitchen area, as well as a small bathroom. Her brother occasionally drops by to bring her cooked food,” Hope Place said in a statement.
Although living alone, Chai remains remarkably independent. She cooks and washes her clothes herself, despite having a limp and a swollen knee.
When the non-governmental organisation (NGO) visited her recently, they were impressed by how neat and tidy her little home was.
“Despite her health problems, Chai is very independent. She takes care of herself and keeps her home clean and organised.
“Her small living space actually works to her advantage,” Hope Place added.
Currently, Chai receives RM500 monthly aid from the Social Welfare Department.
Hope Place is providing her with continuous basic food assistance.
The NGO also extended its gratitude to Sentosa Hospital for referring her case to them.
