BAU: The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Sarawak will conduct the 2026 Economic Census, a nationwide exercise aimed at providing crucial data to guide the formulation of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
Sarawak DOSM director Dayang Rozana Abang Hassan said the census, held once every five years, will be the sixth of its kind and cover major sectors including agriculture, mining and quarrying, manufacturing, construction, and services.
She said field operations are scheduled to begin from Feb to Oct 2026, while engagement sessions with companies and stakeholders will start as early as Nov this year.
“The Economic Census will be conducted nationwide, including Sarawak, with fieldwork from Feb to Oct to collect data from businesses of all sizes.
“The data would be vital for assessing the current economic performance of both state and nation, and would form the basis for the 13MP,” she said.
Speaking to TVS after the HIES/BA 2024 Outreach Session with the community in conjunction with National and World Statistics Day 2025 in Bau, Dayang Rozana stressed the importance of statistics.
“Statistics are critical not only for accurate decision-making but also in helping us understand the real economic and social conditions.
“With reliable and updated data, planning can be carried out more effectively and grounded in facts, ensuring progress and the well-being of the people,” she added.
