BINTULU: The public has been urged to spend prudently during the Gawai celebrations to avoid straining their finances.

Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, said the extended festive period could affect financial stability if not properly managed.

According to him, the community needs to be wise in managing finances.

“Gawai celebrations usually take place in May and June, and should not extend into July as expenses can become uncontrollable.

“We must also manage family finances wisely, including the needs of school-going children. If possible, reduce spending so that money can be used for more important matters,” he was quoted as saying in an UKAS report during the Mantar Gawai Dayak Sebauh 2026 celebration.

The programme was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas here on Friday (May 1).

Dr Rundi added that moderation and careful financial planning can help ensure household well-being is maintained throughout the festive season.
