KUCHING: Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian says in-depth research should be conducted on sports medicine in Sarawak to help speed up recovery of injured athletes.

“This is because sports medicine is quite complicated, as it is involves physiology, physical therapy and needs specific techniques to treat injured athletes,” the Deputy Premier said.

On swimming, he said the sport’s development needs funding and appealed for sponsorships.

“For the sports to truly progress, we need parties to come together and help us fulfil our aspirations.

“We want to provide the opportunity for our children to learn swimming, as it can be used for character development, as they learn about hard work, teamwork and training,” he said during the welcoming dinner held in conjunction with the Short Course Sprint 2023 here yesterday (Sept 7).

Meanwhile, 645 swimmers from 26 clubs from Sarawak, Sabah, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Kedah, Penang) as well as Brunei Darussalam and the Philippines attended the course.

The first edition of the course in 2019 attracted 376 swimmers from Malaysia and Indonesia, and the second edition in 2022 recorded attendance of  529 swimmers from Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.

The third edition was organised by Power Aquatics Swimming Club (PASC) with the support of Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development.

Among others present were PASC president Kapitan Tan Kun Gee and organising chairman Voon Yong Hui.
