SIBU: The spirit of unity and harmony practised by Sarawak’s multi-ethnic communities remains the cornerstone of the state’s political stability, economic progress and sustainable development.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the longhouse culture, which emphasises togetherness and mutual respect, reflects the strength of Sarawak’s social cohesion and must continue to be preserved to ensure the state remains prosperous and progressive towards 2030.
“Longhouse culture symbolises unity. When we are united, there is stability. When there is stability, there will be progress and prosperity.
“It is therefore important for us to maintain this unity and stability so that Sarawak can continue to advance and prosper by 2030,” he said during a visit to Rumah Joseph Abet in Bawang Assan on Wednesday (Jun 3).
Dr. Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said the stability enjoyed by Sarawak has enabled the state government to implement various development projects and initiatives that directly benefit the people.
According to him, the Sarawak government is implementing development projects worth RM9 billion this year while continuing to provide assistance in areas such as education and welfare.
Dr Sim also noted that the visit, which was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing as part of the Gawai Dayak celebration, reflected growing international recognition of Sarawak.
He noted that while the ambassador had previously visited Kuching and Miri, he chose to visit Bintulu and Sibu during this year’s Gawai season to gain a deeper understanding of Sarawak’s culture and way of life.
Dr Sim also described Gawai Dayak as more than just an annual celebration, saying it serves as a platform to strengthen family ties, foster a spirit of sharing and reinforce unity among the state’s diverse communities.
Also present were Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping, deputy minister Michael Tiang Ming Tee, Bukit Assek assemblyman Chieng Jin Ek, Meradong assemblyman Ding Kuong Hiing and Sibu Rural District Council deputy chairman Councillor Wong Ching Yong.
